Painting of All New Surfaces
The Master Painters Association recommends that painting of all new surfaces i.e Plaster, Timber and Metal should have three coats applied as per paint manufacturers specifications and painted to Australian Standard AS/NZ2311:2009.
There has been a trend over a number of years for new homes especially in new estates to have only two coats.
We acknowledge that applying three coats does increase the cost of painting. By applying the correct number of coats as recommended with the appropriate sanding and filling between coats, enables your applicator the opportunity to provide a better standard of paint finish on your new home. This also allows the materials supplied by the paint manufacturer to perform to its maximum.
We also recommend that only premium grade products be used.
Warning -Painting of pre primed weatherboards
Pre priming is designed to protect timber from weather and UV degradation whilst in transit it is not to be a quality wood primer.
Pre primers are made at low cost, quick drying and are solvent based for use on production lines only. The primer is low on binders and will go chalky very quickly when exposed to the weather.
The full sanding and repriming is recommended prior to applying two coats of suitable exterior finish .A 100% acrylic system is normally recommended .
Builders and Architects need to be reminded of the recommendations by the
Australian Paint Manufactures Federation guidelines when painting pre primed timber.
If you paint it as presented, you run the risk of having to re paint when it breaks down at your expense That will include labour & materials.
NOTE: Some general guidance for painting is given but the manufacturers instructions for use for each paint product should be followed.
